Half-day conference: Rethinking our Buildings and Technologies - Meeting Our Climate Targets

Warming strips - a visual representation of the change in temperature in the UK over the last 100 years

Join us as we rethink our building and technologies for a net zero world. Access to products and resources is changing, supply chains are adapting, and businesses are transforming to become more environmentally sustainable and coming under growing pressure to do so. One year on from the UK hosting COP26 and during COP27 we’ll look at how the Thames Valley region is responding in ways that contribute to the development of smart and sustainable solutions in the built environment.

If you are interested in understanding more about how to identify off the shelf low carbon solutions for construction that really work, where you’re currently spending most of your carbon budget, or how regulatory or legislative changes could affect businesses and accelerate development of low carbon technologies, we’ll be discussing all of this and more.

Come together with leading experts from university and business to explore the challenges and opportunities for development and adoption of low carbon technologies in the built environment.

This event is run in partnership with Thames Valley Built Environment Hub, sponsored by the University of Reading.

Our Speakers

Alison Foster - Building Berkshire Together – The role of the NHS and the New Hospital Programme in Delivering Net Zero Carbon.

Alison Foster is Programme Director for Building Berkshire Together New Hospital Programme at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and is the Trust Lead for Net Zero Carbon.

Alison has worked in or for the NHS for 30 years. Starting a mental health nurse before going on to leadership and transformation roles, she has also worked in the voluntary sector as Chair of Healthwatch in West Berkshire, winning a Pride of Reading award for her community engagement. She has lived in Reading for over 20 years and believes passionately about the collaboration across different sectors to bring significant benefits to the local community. Professor John Connaughton - Buildings, Businesses and Big Challenges – getting to Net Zero

John Connaughton worked in the construction sector for over 30 years: his move into academia was motivated by his belief that connecting industry with academia is important for resolving global sector issues. Prof. Connaughton’s research is focused on issues of interdisciplinary collaboration in construction process, the changing nature of construction professions, and energy use in buildings.

Main image - Climate stripes:

Developed in 2018 by Professor Ed Hawkins at the University of Reading each stripe represents the average temperature for a single year, relative to the average temperature over the period as a whole. Shades of blue indicate cooler-than-average years, while red shows years that were hotter than average. The stark band of deep red stripes on the right-hand side of the graphic show the rapid heating of our planet in recent decades.
