Speaker: Angela Lamacraft, Senior Consultant MSc IEng MIOA - Sustainable Acoustics

How space sounds (its ‘soundscape’) affect how we feel and ultimately has consequences on how well a space works for its occupants.

In this presentation, Angela will cover:

  • the basics of acoustics, including some of the different metrics used when describing sound (not all decibels are equal)
  • why we use a logarithmic scale and why we often frequency weight sound levels when discussing environmental sound
  • the difference between absorption and sound insulation and why flanking can be the biggest issue in a building
  • aspects of acoustic design in enclosed spaces
  • why we now need to be considering sound quality as it is perceived and not just the levels or frequency when designing for the future.

Sustainability is fundamental to our work and we will discuss the ways acoustics can influence the sustainability of a project from the inside out, from materials, energy, embodied carbon and making sure the investment works for a better outcome in the future.
